Homemade Vanilla and Cinnamon Apple Tarts with Apricot Glaze

I always presumed that apple tarts beautifully arranged, would require ‘pastry chef’ skill level to create something alike. But no, these are relatively easy to make, require minimal cooking time and taste wonderful!

What is an Apple Tart?

Apple tarts are much like an apple pie, but do not have a pastry lid. The thin crispy base is filled with rich flavoursome apple slices, this being a consistency that will not leak but allow the tart to be lifted out of the tin ready to beautifully serve free standing on a platter.  A family desert that is treasured in so many households, apple tarts are wonderful to bake all year round!

Our Homemade Vanilla and Cinnamon Apple tarts with an Apricot Glaze are perfect for cooking with and for the family. They are quick to make, have just a few ingredients and are a hit with everyone! A perfect fancy twist on the classic family apple pie!

Storage and ‘can I make ahead’?

These tarts are best when eaten soon after making! In our family they are usually eaten up pretty quickly! However, they can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for two days. If you choose to refrigerate, these tartlets can be stored for three days (loosely cover when in the fridge).

These tarts make a wonderful desert if you want to pre-prepare and make ahead, perfect for busy families! Many of the components can be made beforehand, and then arranged together and baked in one go. The Pastry can be stored in the freezer and defrosted the night before baking. The buttery apple slices can be prepared and stored in the fridge overnight (ensure to cover). Combine the pastry and apple elements, bake, and allow 5 minutes to whip together the glaze and you have a tasty treat!

Ingredient List:

This ingredient list is to make two apple tarts.

  • Ready rolled Shortcrust pastry (Use about 1/3)Ready rolled shortcrust pastry saves lots of time, and is ready to go without any rolling, perfect for cooking with little ones! However, a pastry block or homemade taste just as good!
  • 2 Appleswe use Braeburn, however any eating apples work wonderfully.
  • 1 ½ tsp Vanilla Essence
  • 2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 30g Butter (melted)
  • 1 tbsp Granulated Sugar

Ingredients for the Apricot Glaze:

  • 43g Apricot Jam
  • 2 tbsp Water

Recipe:

  • To start, preheat the oven to 150 c
  • Next peel both apples and then portion into thin slices
  • Add the sliced apples to a saucepan, along with the butter, cinnamon, vanilla essence, and sugar
  • Toss the ingredients together, on a gentle heat for approximately 5 mins (until the apples are soft and coated)
  • Using butter or margarine grease both tart tins
  • Then, place the tart tins on the rolled-out pastry, gently pressing to create an outline circle
  • Use a knife to cut around the outline (adding a few cm around the rim) and arrange the pastry into the tins
  • Use your hands to position the coated apple slices in a circular pattern around the outside edge of the prepared tart tin, working into the centre. This will create a floral pattern!
  • Bake the tarts in a preheated oven for 45-55minutes, until they are golden brown. Once cooked, leave to cool for half an hour

Apricot Glaze:

Frequently Asked Questions

I prefer using dessert apples, as they are sweeter in taste. If you choose to use Bramley Apples, the sugar quantity added would benefit from being increased.

Brown Sugar tastes just as good when added to the apple mixture!

Yes! Cinnamon works well, but mixed spice, cloves ect work well too!
